The Feeling is Mutual

Born out of an Online Hackathon at HAU Hebbel am Ufer in 2020 that gave way to HAU4, this project is a hybrid proposal in search of alternative theater forms that resulted in a digitalized prototype. ‘The Feeling is Mutual’ reflects on the truth and fluidity of core emotions through personal exploration. Asking those involved to look for new ways to empathize. A reminder that you’re not the only one…

In September 2020, HAU Hebbel am Ufer hosted an Online Hackathon as part of their Digital Lab "Artistic Maneuvers for the Digital Present". After a three day collective exchange of ideas, a jury consisting of DGTL FMNSM, explain, Nathan Fain, Katja Grawinkel-Claassen, Romily Alice Walden and HAU selected three projects for a residency at HAU3. The Feeling is Mutual was one of them. This three week research residency mentored by DGTL FMNSM was funded by the programme for digital development in the cultural sector of Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa.

And in 2021, the piece was further developed with the support by Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, as part of NEUSTART KULTUR.

ABOUT / CONCEPT / REASON OF BEING

‘The Feeling is Mutual’ came from the desire to break the bubble of isolation after months of lockdown and social restrictions. The show is a digital experience that explores emotions in a virtual space.

Watching through the lens of a 360 camera, the audience travels through the stage of HAU, where 5 performers are moving within a dancing cycle. In that same space, the audience interacts with digital, floating elements such as 3D images, voice memos and projections. The piece lets you design your own viewing experience in the digital space. You are the one choosing where to watch and where to move.

This added layer grants detail and personal point of views to the overall performance, and opens up the possibility of worldwide interaction and accessibility.

It reflects on the truth and fluidity of human feelings through personal exploration. Asking those involved to look for new ways to empathize. A reminder that you’re not the only one…
